Correct me, but is it possible to get a PhD in any software discipline?? Of course there are a lot of Phd's in Software. Image Processing, and Cryptology are fields which definitely need an advanced degrees. Operating System Developers have advanced degrees too. Several years ago when UC Berkeley was at the forefront of UNIX development, the joke was that you could count the number of Software Phds awarded by counting the number of features in Berkeley Unix. I believe that the MOSAIC( the first Internet Browser), which was the inflexion point of the Internet age, grew out of a University Phd project.
