You're correct, patents are filed for business reasons, not to establish creativity. And it is a very big business indeed as Texas Instruments showed about 10 years ago and every year since. At the time, all of their profit could be accounted for by royalties.... IBM strives every year to be the leader in new patents. Consider what Rambus has done to the memory manufacturers, and all without a fab of their own.
