I think the Nazis viewed the Communists largely as Jewish leftists. The Nazis were more racially motivated than politically motivated, but both groups of course were major targets. The targets were anybody who might resist the totalitarian state and those deemed to be of lesser races. Any other political parties, left or right were targets. The Communists also happened to be a very large party. Two leftist groups battling for power is what it was, both vying for power. The Nazis were no conservative organization. Look at the RAD organization. All young men served in the RAD labor organization before the Wehrmacht.
