My two kids and a friend of theirs have just started a web-based business (www.booksoncampus.com). To do this they had to file a "doing business as" statement with the city, listing our home phone number. What I didn't realize was that this opens one up to a whole new onslaught of marketing calls.

A most amusing series has come recently. A guy called up one morning and asked to speak to our younger son Ted (he's a junior in high school and the one that did all the programming). My wife, now carefully trained in the ways of business, did not say that he was at school, but simply said he was unavailable, and suggested the person call back and leave a voicemail. Well it turned out that the guy was from the NRCC and wanted to invite Ted to a conference of business leaders in Washington. A little bit of googling let me figure out that the NRCC was not in fact the National Resource Center for Cephalopods (that's google's second suggestion). Well Ted didn't respond to the call, and since then we've had an escalating series of calls culminating in one today asking him to come to Washington to attend a dinner with the President! (I assume of course he'd be expected to pay royally for the privilege).

And then of course there was the notice from some city or state tax assessor asking inter alia whether the new business had any pipes and wiring they could tax. <g>
