Nixon kept escalating it until the 72 election race forced him to promise to end the war "with dignity". Ths led to a Vietnamization of the war, US troops pulling out but the war continuing with tons of US bombing. The worst period of the war was during Nixon's first term. 1968-1972. That was also when the protests got going and the whole 60's rebellion. JFK never would have escalated that war. A lot of special interests were behind that.
