Actually, in my high school class of 1968 (73 students), there were two of us who vocally opposed to the war in Viet Nam. Nope, we weren't labeled the Lone Ranger and Tonto. We were labeled Mr. & Mrs. Marx.

Had I known of the fabulous term tontos utiles (useful idiots) you can bet I would have been alienating my classmates by calling them exactly that as they mindlessly lined up at the draft board, or enlisted outright, in what they considered their patriotic duty; and which at the time Defense Secretary Robert McNamara was noting as a policy mistake in his private diary.

I went to school in NW Illinois. The political consciousness there is not that different for that of Iowa, which greatly disappointed me recently in their inane caucuses, where the "unreal deal" of a rhetoric-rich, content-lite candidate like John Kerry could sweet-talk a befuddled electorate into sticking with an aristocratic Washington insider pretending to be a populist, instead of engaging in a vote for a real change in Washington.

The electorate in the heartland is putty in the hands of the image makers. In many ways, they're just as naive today as they were in the 1960s.
