Kerry is totally his own man now. He is the new leader of the Democratic party, has never taken any PAC money, took very little soft money (and only for a few months before the law went into effect banning it) and it not beholden to the party, the DNC, the Kennedys or anyone else. I don't know how much more of a individual you need. He is remarkably free of special interest influence. Bush on the other hand was financed and owned lock, stock and barrel by the Halliburton, Bectel, energy company cabal and Poppy's old friends. Once he got into power he immediately started paying them back, beginning with pulling out of the Kyoto Treaty, breaking other treaties then ramping up SDI and calling for 1300 new power plants as his friends gouged the public on energy prices. Remember?
