Cheney was out today, lying:Vice president defends war in Iraq in Illinois appearance

America was justified in going to war in Iraq because Saddam Hussein had the capability of producing weapons of mass destruction, Vice President Dick Cheney said Saturday during a fund-raising event.

The vice president spoke for about 20 minutes to nearly 200 supporters in suburban Chicago at the $1,500-a-plate luncheon benefiting Republican U.S. House candidates. While inspectors have failed to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, Cheney said Saddam had the scientists and the technology needed to produce them.

"We know that Saddam Hussein had the intent to arm his regime with weapons of mass destruction and Saddam Hussein had something else - he had a record of using weapons of mass destruction against his enemies and against his own people," he said.

Cheney called on Congress to renew the Patriot Act, an anti-terrorism bill that critics say has curbed civil liberties but Cheney defended as allowing federal law enforcement to share more intelligence information.

"We used these tools to catch embezzlers and drug traffickers and we need these tools as well to hunt terrorists," he said.

Cheney also praised U.S. intelligence officers for discovering terrorist plots that he said authorities were then able to prevent. On Friday, President Bush created a seven-member bipartisan commission and told the members to examine the apparently faulty prewar intelligence that suggested Iraq had chemical and biological weapons stockpiles and an aggressive nuclear weapons program.

"Americans can be grateful every day for the skillful and daring service of our nation's intelligence professionals," Cheney said.

The fund-raiser at Rosemont's convention center, sponsored by the National Republican Congressional Committee, raised money to help elect Republicans to the U.S. House. Organizers said 187 people paid $1,500 each for lunch and to hear Cheney speak, which means the event raised more than $280,000.
