i am hoping, barring injury problems, that Westbrook of Eagles becomes a famous "sleeper"--eventhough he gained more yardage than any player at his college level than any in history he was still a no name in the draft by Eagles and they grabbed him in 3rd round only because he was in the Eagles backyard.
Reid admits he never took the time to go over to Villanova and watch him play, but just that every weekend there was another Westbrook does this, does that headline---so he thought this kid must have something.
But the Eagles failed on Billy"WhiteShoes"Johnson.
Every weekend sports sections in Philly would have how Billy J.(Widener College), a 5'8" 160pound asthmatic had had returned like 4 kicks for touchdowns(or whatever--his stats were unreal:).
But they did not draft him.
<<Would Favre have been as good if he played in SD?????>> riddles for which we have no answer.
Look at Peyton Manning's dad, what if he had been drafted by San Francisco?? Would he now be remembered as one the greatest quaterbacks of all-time, like Montana???:)
But i think it is more than the system, i see it as mixture of special skills, plus mental toughness and having talent around you.
I watched Phil Simms get annihilated by pass rush and no matter how many times he went down he got up and could comeback and beat you.
But then i watched Norm Snead turn to jello and awfulness when he got hit over and over.
Johnny Unitas, relentless grit.
Remember Bobby Layne? Guy couldn't do anything particularly well--just relentless desire to win.
Plummer, you could see, he had much potential with an AWFUL team.Plummer success was no surprise for me.
Above all he had that ability to be dangerous in the last quarter--even with the sad sack Cardinals.
Now if Montana was with Cardinals of this era i think he would be having a very rough time--no QB can overcome being on a bad team, as Manning proved in his career with the Saints.
Same goes for MCNabb, he has never had receivers--McNabb's future depends on having receiver talent.
Randall Cunningham was a talent wasted, probably had the worst coaching i can think of--Buddy Ball was a disaster for Cunningham.
Ryan, defensive coaching great, offensive coaching--the worst and the offensive assistants he had were taught to play Buddy Ball--have Cunningham run for his life under a rush and ad lib--that was Buddy Ball, chaos.:).
Marino--we know Marino HAD to have great protection, that man had SLOW feet:)
I saw him throw 5 interceptions against Penn State in college in one game--i thought he was AWFUL.
Penn State had a great defensive line that year, they reduced Marino to jello in that game.
