So was the idea, "Turn away from the current conditions of warfare to a more peaceful time?"

But in the original song, the whole tone is very aggressive and militaristic and that meaning does not fit.

Millions of people in the South have been singing this thing for over a hundred years, and most have no idea exactly what it means, though it is a very lively tune.
