It seems network news budgets come into play when there are several candidates. They have no intention of covering all candidates because it's considered too costly; therefore they try to pare down field ASAP.
Kerry campaign(being infested with WashDC insiders trying to protect their turf from outsiders) has probably helped defray cost for news networks which results in much wider media coverage. The viewing public has no idea how political campaigns can be manipulated & assume other Dems must have more information--so they jump on what they perceive as the momentum train. In fact, Kerry is being pushed by insider Wash, with assistance from national media and once Bush campaign has a chance to compare Kerry's liberal voting record & post-Vietnam war protesting activities with Bush's shepherding of the country through 9/11, defeat of Taliban in Afghanistan, victory in Iraq, he will most likely be re-elected.
