Why should one worker get a spousal benefit upon death or med benefits when a single worker may would to designate his brother or sister for such bennys?

Exactly. We either need to stop granting bennies based on marital status or make marriage available to everyone. I don't see why the defense-of-marriage folks don't get that. I'm not for "destroying" marriage, either, but they need to recognize a genuine inequity and fix it. Making bennies equitable is not only the right thing to do, it's more sensible than amending the US Constitution, for heaven's sake. The only choice is not between gay marriage and a Constitutional amendment forbidding same. Those are outlandish extremes.
