Platitudes, evasions and conclusory statements - that is my reaction to Bush's interview with Russert.

NOTE: I am a Republican and former delegate at the National Convention. I would probably vote Republican in this election if the party ran an electable candidate (i.e. someone other than Bush).

Examples of platitudes, evasions and conclusory statements:

Platitude:
RUSSERT: Why not say, I will not cut taxes any more until we have balanced the budget? If our situation is so precious and delicate because of the war, why do you keep cutting taxes and draining money from the treasury?

BUSH: Well, because I believe that the best way to stimulate economic growth is to let people keep more of their own money.

Me: This sounds great if the country was running a surplus. Today we are borrowing from our children and grandchildren to put money in our pockets today. It is not our money that we are keeping.

Evasion:
RUSSERT: How, why, as a fiscal conservative as you like to call yourself, would you allow a $500 billion deficit and this kind of deficit disaster?

BUSH: Sure. The budget I just proposed to the Congress cuts the deficit in half in five years.

Me: Instead of answering the question, Bush claims he will fix the problem that he created, if only Americans will give him another term. Almost exactly 2 years ago, Bush said the deficit for the current fiscal year would be $14 Billion. Now it is projected at $521 Billion. How can anyone believe anything Bush says?

Conclusory statement:
RUSSERT: It's now nearly a year, and we are in a very difficult situation. Did we miscalculate how we would be treated and received in Iraq?

BUSH: Well, I think we are welcomed in Iraq.

Me: We are welcomed in Iraq? Based on what information?

Final comment: It is easy to get distracted by Bush’s inability to articulate a sentence. I have always felt that clear speaking was evidence of clear thinking. The inverse is not necessarily true (muddled speaking is not necessarily evidence of muddled thinking). Some people just have trouble articulating their thoughts and are much better at communicating in writing. So it takes some effort to get to the substance of Bush’s comments. Only then can you safely draw the conclusion that his answers are evidence of muddled thinking.
