OT Albert, RE: "we were talking about cost of attending university not grade school. But to answer your question, no, I did not work until I was 17 or 18"

It's related. What you do during your grade school years is completely related to college and grad school.

If you're babysitting for the children of a married couple that attends Sunday night bowling at midnight, this is time away from studies, sleep as well as more educational opportunities (rich kids volunteer to get challenging work experiences that no one would pay them to get, but gets them to the next higher paying job faster than a babysitter.) Also, if you do babysitting, cleaning, cooking, tutoring and other such tasks, you aren't given a W-2 statement you can supply when applying for grants to prove the number of hours you are working, so poor kids don't even bother applying. Yet another disadvantage the poorer student faces.

re: You sound like you graduated before the 1990 recession, when government budgets cuts were negatively impacting professors' funding

RE: "True and I have not been tracking education cost"

Heard from someone applying that Calif raised their rates by 40%. Wonderful way to put the poorer students at a disadvantage. Forces them to work more hours, at the risk of grades. Yet another disadvantage the poorer student faces compared to rich kids who get to focus exclusively on studies.

RE: "I am a bit concerned how much I would have to pay if my daughter if she would go to that school 12 years from now"

One estimate says school will cost $213k 18 years from now. Cheer up, she can always babysit on a Sunday night until 3AM in the morning, while the rich kids get to focus on studies and go to bed early every night. Or maybe she can migrate to India where the education is free.
