Kerry was really dumb to use that word given the climate. The folks who have had treason on the brain for a couple of years now jumped all over it. But for those of us not predisposed to think treason, it's just "lie" with a touch of nuance.

Main Entry: be·tray
Pronunciation: bi-'trA
Function: verb
Etymology: Middle English, from be- + trayen to betray, from Old French traïr, from Latin tradere -- more at TRAITOR
transitive senses
1 : to lead astray; especially : SEDUCE

There's nothing wrong with that connotation of the word. I expect that's what he meant because the usage seems apt to me.
