What would that do to our existing laws and customs on family, marriage, divorce and all the attendant rights and responsibilities?

I don't see much impact if the polygamy is your standard multiple-wife type. We might have to add a paragraph to the social security law stating how the women share the survivor benefits, whether they get even shares or the first wife gets more or what. We'd have to add a couple of lines on the IRS forms. <g> It would be a nuisance, but easily doable.
