Single Encoder - Decoder Chip to Enable DivX(R) Playback Capability In Recordable DVD Players

FREMONT, Calif., Feb. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ESS Technology (Nasdaq: ESST - News), a leading supplier of silicon solutions for digital audio, video and imaging consumer electronics, today announced it has started sampling its Vantage(TM)II MX single chip MPEG-2 codec that will also provide the capability to playback DivX video content. The Vantage II MX chip integrates ESS's flagship Vibratto(TM)S DivX DVD decoder core and its Vantage MPEG-2 encoder core into a single device.

As a leading provider of multimedia technology, ESS developed the Vantage II MX product to allow manufacturers to address the simultaneous growing consumer demand for recordable DVD products and increasingly popular DivX video content. The highly integrated Vantage II MX will improve time to market by eliminating complicated software and hardware designs, and will reduce the total cost of the materials required for recordable DVD platforms.

"We are very excited about the Vantage II MX product and we're pleased that ESS is bringing DivX technology to the DVD Recorder market. We look forward to working with ESS to fully DivX Certify the Vantage II chip," said Jordan Greenhall, co-founder and CEO of DivXNetworks.

DivX video is one of the world's most popular video compression technology, with over 100 million users worldwide. ESS expects several major consumer electronics manufacturers to ship DivX Certified DVD recorders using ESS's Vantage II MX single chip codec during this year.

Victor Ren, vice president of marketing of ESS Technology said, "DivX video content is becoming very popular world-wide. With Vantage II MX, our customers can build a DVD recorder that is also capable of playing DivX movies. This gives our customers the advantage of differentiating their products from other DVD recorders on the market."
