I remember everything about those choppers, their thumping blades, their gun support, the medivacs and the free rides sitting in the open doorway with my feet hanging out and especially that last ride lifting out of the jungle floor, popping smoke and looking down at the men looking up at me for the last time. After I got hit and while coming back from RxR and malaria I always listened for the thump of the choppers and followed them to their pad. I could hitchhike anywhere with you guys. I tried to get a ride as a door gunner on a loche once when a pilot found us on an LZ and picked me out of bunch of guys that figured getting killed after a hot meal was better than getting killed after c-rations, but my company wouldn't let me go. If there's a heaven, it's got to be full of choppers.
