Did I, really? Where? I’m not even sure what we mean when we say “the press”. It’s not as if there’s only one.

Since the advent of the Internet and cable TV, the whole notion of “mainstream media” has really lost its relevance. People get the news they want, unless they are too lazy to push a button. Maybe not a bad system, in a way. Everybody except the wildest extremists has access to fair and balanced news, with “fair and balanced” meaning, of course, news presented in a way that conforms to their own particular ideological bent.

Of course the treatment of news as a source of affirmation, rather than information, is not doing much to spur informed debate, but that’s not going to disturb too many people. I’m not sure very many people even remember what informed debate is.
