The Uboat danger didn't last that long off the coast. Mostly out in the North Atlantic. The boats at that time needed suport ships, and we had long range bombers that could range out far enough to protect our shores once we recognized the need.
You're right -- not allowing the UK to go down was the reason we went into Europe. Not to protect outselves, but to protect the British.
Let's not forget that this whole discussion started when Redfish wrote "I am not so brave, and would prefer that our armed forces be used only to protect Americans, not strangers on the other side of the world." I was just pointing out that our engagement in Europe in WWII wasn't to protect Americans, but to protect, well maybe not strangers, but others on the other side of the world (Europe in 1940 was a lot further away than Iraq is today by any reasonable measure of travel, communications, information, etc.)
You seem to be supporting my position here, that we didn't go to Europe to protect Americans. |
