There are certainly legitimate reasons for us to go to war other than to protect the lives of U.S. citizens.

Basically so long as it benefits the U.S., I am willing to consider going to war. It may have the tangential result of benefitting others, as well.

But it is hard to see how liberating a bunch of savages in Iraq will provide us with much of a benefit. Perhaps if we maintained permanent and substantial military bases in the country, or got to buy oil from them at a discounted price.
