It puts things in your life in perspective when you think back on the worst things you had to worry about then and look at the worst things you have to worry about now, doesn't it? The thing that struck me when I got home was how little this place was affected when so many of us were living a life and death struggle to stay alive every minute. Then you come home and nothing here has changed. Go figure.

We had a new guy out one time. Dark haired, quiet, glasses. I never knew his name. He came out to my squad in the jungle and took one in the throat. Our medic did a trach on him but he died within minutes. The nation didn't mourn him. No one remembers him except for a few guys in my squad, if they're still alive and if they even remember. But his family does. I've got my own kids now and I know that their lives changed forever and that their pain never ended.

All for what? We ought to have good answers to that question. We ought to know why we go to war, what we hope to accomplish, and that it is doable.

In Iraq the "why we went to war" changes every couple of months. The "what we hope to accomplish" gets toned down all the time and also changes. Whether it's "doable" gets pushed under the table with the phrase "we can't afford to fail." A phrase that was popular to justify our ongoing involvement in Vietnam, by the way.

I wish I'd known that guy's name. I wish I'd had a chance to talk to him in the 2-3 days he was there so he'd have felt like he was with a friend when he died. I didn't have a chance. I was the pointman and I was too busy trying to find a way through that jungle that would keep us alive to have any energy for a new guy at night.

It's a very bad thing when you send people to die for you, and it's not necessary. I hope that Kerry knows that. I don't think that Bush and Cheney really understand.
