TI2- I remember 3" and have seen 1" wafers... There are
other reasons that 450mm wafers won't become "fashionable"
the substrates become to bulky and hard to handle beyond
300mm.... Rough estimate to design a new piece of semi
equipment is about $20-$30M for each piece of equipment... an integrated set of equipment would cost roughly $200-$400M to develop...it would take a boat load of sales to justify the development cost... the sales
price would likely be around $10M+ each to purchase, think
of the cost to build a complete production fab...you probably get to around $7B-$8B for a fab...ROI becomes
cost prohibitive...it would be more practical to develop
300mm GAs wafers or some new innovative technology. Silicon will soon reach its' performance limitation. Other
materials will replace it at the extreme high end. BB
