TAIPEI, Feb 11 (Reuters) - Taiwan's Compal Electronics Inc , the world's No. 2 contract maker of laptop computers, expected first-quarter shipments to rise 50 percent from the same period a year earlier, the company said on Wednesday.

But first-quarter shipments are projected to decline 10 to 15 percent from the fourth quarter as demand tapered in the post-Christmas period, the company said in a statement.

The forecast came after close of trade on Wednesday. Compal shares rose 0.94 percent to end at T$43.10, while the main TAIEX fell 0.52 percent. (US$1=T$33.2)
