..not a valid proxy for the commitment, merely a good indicator. There's a close enough correlation to make general points about the preferability of marriage to single parenthood,... OK, I'll go along with that. There are certainly examples of married people deficient in commitment, for example. ..but it's not strong enough to use in an analysis of the efficacy of the institution of marriage as currently practiced. That's a judgment you've made. I don't see that its self-evident.
