Well Barney Frank on CNN said this whole trade matter has reached the boiling point in congress anyway. The truth of the matter is that the only way trade is relevant now is as a tool to unseat Bush. Frank says no more trade agreements can go through (this recent australia deal was in the works for a long time ago) - Cafta is stalled and voters are unilaterally demanding some protection from a whole series of events in the last 20 years that have concentrated the entire US economy for the benefit of a very few. This includes offshoring, higher taxes on work than passive, corp taxes that are at 30s levels as % of GDP, no free trade for things like drugs that people are forced to buy. The point being that change is coming whether the white house wants it or not. The republicans in the rust belt states are getting desperate. I think CA would be desperate too but we have a dem legislature.

Free trade doesn't work at an individual level which is what Mankew is espousing. Free trade only works at a corporate level. Workers are going to need protections in the US, thats the way it is.

I'm worried that the disgust for Bush is peaking too early.
