It is the Democratic party and the Clinton bunch who will advise Kerry. Kerry has a history of working with others in the Senate. Recall his quip to Dean during the South Carolina debate where he said "As President you have got to know how the Congress works. Many of the bills passed do not have to carry your name as long as the provisions in the bill carry what you stand for. For that to happen you have to work behind the scenes with the authors of the bill to make sure your provisions are included."

That is what Kerry has done. He has a good record of working with others in the Senate. So I do not know where the ego thing is coming from.
