Scientists are a strange lot. Nothing new in that. :-)

A recently published book may interest some. I read it and enjoyed it. "A Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson.

It recounts the developments in science and mathematics over the last several hundred years. It proves beyond doubt that many geniuses are exceedingly odd. The Sternbach drug experiments reminded me of John Scott Haldane and his son. Haldane* and son worked out diving tables, studied altitude sickness and heat stroke. They used themselves and their friends in the studies. :-) For example:

"To understand more exactly how carbon monoxide leaks killed miner, he methodically poisoned himself, carefully taking and measuring his own blood samples the while. He quit only when he was on the verge of losing all muscle control and his blood saturation level reached 56% ... only fractionally removed from nearly certain lethality." Father and son would also take turns gassing each other until one would pass out. pg 243

The book also has some really funny** stories about French scientists.

** To those who are not French. :-)
