The NAACP won an out of court settlement whereby Jeb would be able to purge 97,000 mostly minority voters in 2002 but never again. If the McBride race had been very close they'd have stolen another one. The way it worked is that a GOP consulting firm was brought in to be intentionally sloppy about taking off the voter rolls anyone with the same or similar name and birthdate as any out of state ex-felon. They intentionally did not double check to see if "Leroy Brown" or "Juan Martinez" was the same guy as the ex-felon in Texas or any other state.

After Greg Palast's investigation revealed this fraud the consultants admitted they made a "mistake" but Jeb denied it. Whereupon, the NAACP sued and they reached the above settlement. The point is that most of the 57,700 were minority mainly legal voters. If only 10% of them had been allowed to vote and voted for Gore he'd be president now.

gregpalast.com - raw evidence is in his book "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy", which is well researched.

why didn't the DEms do more about it? Because Bush was already sworn in and people were scared that to bring this up might rock the country even more than it was already rocked. Some say Gore also wimped out, prefering to be seen as a good sport rather than a sore loser.

Other GOP-run states may employ these same methods to cut thousands of minority (and therefore probable DEms) off the rolls, but no longer in Florida. This scandal BTW is one of the reason Ketherine Harris isn't running for Senator. She not only was party to this but destroyed evidence before the re-counting was even done.
