I was thinking about that Greenspan speech, and the Q&A that followed, trying to make some sense of it.

First I suppose I should thank him because he is trying so hard to give me the wealth effect.

However, it is quite apparent that not only is this a borrowed wealth effect, it is one that Greenie has no regard who he borrows from.

What if the Japanese and the Chinese steal a chapter from Greenie's book? What if they start jawboning? BOJ can hint at running out of ink to print those dollar buying yen. China can mumble something about maybe buying those US Treasuries not so good idea.

When should they do this? When Presidential debates, especially on the subject of the budget deficits, get hot and heavy.

Jay. Your idea of 2004 being ok may have a twist to it. Yes, this is an election year. What if the world decides that the world would be better off without George Bush? They do not have to fire a single bullet. I bet you Japan and China alone can tank the US economy, risking major repercussions at home of course. GWB will go the same way his father did - it's the economy stupid.
