This may seem strange, but nowadays the Trade Press Release seems like a political tool. Compare these two reports:

From 2000: census.gov

From 2003: census.gov

The old reports were just the facts. But look at these highlights from the current PR (sounds like a Bush speech):

-November exports to China ($3.3 billion) were a record.

-November imports from OPEC ($5.4 billion) were the lowest since February 2003 ($4.8 billion).

-The November deficit with Mexico ($3.0 billion) was the lowest since January 2003 ($3.0 billion).

-November exports of advanced technology products ($16.7 billion) were the highest since March 2002 ($17.1 billion).

-November imports of energy related petroleum products (363.9 million barrels) were the lowest since February 2003 (316.6 million barrels).
