Faulty thinking, as I see it.

The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) said the money it made during its third quarter, ended Dec. 31, 2003, enabled it to move from a loss to a gain on its cumulative market investments since early 2002.

I don't think the government should be in the equities markets, especially not with Canadians' retirement savings.

Here's where I think their gains came from -

they own extremely large positions in Nortel, RBC, and a few other well-known Canadian based companies.

And they're pumping more funds into these same companies each month.

Not surprisingly, that helps drive the price of the equities higher.

So, start with a large position in Nortel for example, then add to that position and drive the price up, and the overall portfolio looks great - until you try to get out.

They're playing with fire in my opinion.
