Herr Doktor Sigmund Freud played a major role in popularizing the use of cocaine in medicine.

Freud, about the mid-1880's claimed that cocaine was harmless, a wonder drug, and impossible to become addicted to.

It was soon clear he was seriously wrong. Not only could it produce serious addiction, but it was a very strong stimulant- -so strong that fairly small amounts could be lethal.

And THAT was known well over 100 years ago.

But AS didn't know it in the (maybe) 1970s.
