I did NOT enjoy the durian
HOlly, Holly, Holly... don't you remember? We had to tear it from your hands while you cried, NO NO, it's MINE."

I just read such a good essay by Jonathan Kranzen on his father's Alzheimer's and the pattern of failing memories, and how our brain creates memories. It is actually a bunch of separate stimuli that we piece together, filling in the blanks. Then as we retell the story, the memory becomes more and more fixed and solid, so that when you say Holly and durian-- where the rest of us remember you leaning over the durian protectively and making yumyum noices, you now remember yourself as having a modest sample and passing it on. We all know you really took the leftovers home and had it the next day in a sandwich.
(Oooo-- I bet that makes even you cringe)
