Faint praise indeed. I'm long enough in the tooth to know the correlation of SUV and Gameboy production with human happiness is tenuous.

India and USA are worlds apart. But having spent some time in both, I'm not certain that happiness per capita is higher on the SUV-filled freeways of Los Angeles, where GDP per capita is at championship levels. Ritalin and Prozac use are endemic in the USA. I have no idea how much is used in India per person, or what other measures of happiness would give.

A subjective guide is that my happiness seems to be about constant, irrespective of how many gadgets I have. I'm now surrounded by everything [the whole panoply of modern life]. I used to have nearly nothing. I like having my stuff, but am not happier [though it's fun to get another gadget and I enjoy it]. If I go and stay in a cabin with nothing, my mind clears and I am even happier! For a while, but then I get bored and it's time to get back in the cogs of the machines.

It's a tricky business, best left to individuals to find self fulfillment. Check out Maslow's hierarchy of needs. At the top it doesn't say "Helengrad decides everything". "I love Big Brother" is not nirvana.

I can't wait until I've got a CDMA-powered phragmented photon cyberphone. That should be paradise. Here's the functionality - everyone on Earth will have one. Then they'll be really happy. Message 19712987
