Make an effort to grasp the gestalt of the entire electorate

I'm reading polls and commentary from the rust belt everyday now. It appears that PA,OH,MO,IN and other states have been devastated by offshoring and the Bush poll numbers are sinking hard.

In fact, republicans appear to be scrambling to support Bush over this jobs issue.

I think the reason the Bush people are in so much trouble is that they have never seen how offshoring works in practice. Once you let it take hold in a certain industry, there is never robust US jobs growth again, no matter what the economic picture for the US company involved. If there is robust job creation in the manufacturing sector to turn this around for Bush in 6 mos I will be SHOCKED. The US economy will be flopping around just like now, with higher deficits. You watch.

OUT-OF-WORK AMERICANS

Nearly 2.8 million factory jobs have been lost since Bush took office and the issue looms large ahead of November's vote, where victory in rust-belt states like Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Michigan could be key.

In addition to Democrats, some U.S. business leaders have criticized Mankiw.

A traditional base of support for the Republican administration, the National Association of Manufacturers accused the White House of being "insensitive" to unfair trade and complained that not enough was being done to help American manufacturers.
