A proxy server is an intermediary that sits in between your browser and the Internet. Your browser's URL requests go to it, and it fetches the reply and returns it to you. They are used to cache commonly requested pages, thus saving the need to go fetch it from the host server. In other words, they aggregate traffic from within a zone (such as a corporate intranet) and can be used to filter some data or sites, and to return already cached data.

Proxy servers are often used within large domains that use NAT for the clients within the domain instead of provisioning each with their own valid Internet IP address.
