The first snow of the season often strikes me the same way -- magical, especially snow softly falling on a still night. Deep snow lying like a heavy blank over the spruce and pine forests around my house is also quite wonderful. Snow is also very beautiful on our very cold nights when the sky is velvety black and tiny ice crystals drift down out of the darkness. The stars sparkle in a sort of oscillating brilliance, like tiny spinning diamonds, due to the kind of atmospheric conditions we get here. Orion looms very large and spins crazily across the sky over the course of the night. On very cold nights, the snow glitters like flat flakes of shimmering glass, and it crunches and squeaks under your feet, like walking across styrofoam. Once in awhile, the borealis is visible in our area, often on the coldest nights, usually looking like dancing piano keys or else translucent stage curtains hanging over the northern horizon. Those are the times when snow is wonderful.
