JDN, they weren't too careful with me. I was leaking pus and blood from my wounds for almost two weeks before they finally healed over. Made for some really purple, raised scars that took years to melt down.

In fairness to Kerry, though, he was on a boat, not in the jungle. I'm sure it was easier to stay cleaner. He probably had lots of water and that sterilizing, yellow soap that they used to clean our jungle rot and scrapes.

No matter how much you dislike Kerry's voting record, I don't think you can refer to his "Nam experience" as "whatever it was." It's pretty clear that it was the kind of experience that reveals a man that had courage and cared about his men. The guy he pulled out of the water was really clear on that.

He said that the explosion blew him into the water. It was an ambush and the boat was just about around the bend. He thought he was a goner. He was trying to swim underwater to avoid getting hit by the bullets that were flying from the ambush. Kerry ordered the boat back into the ambush and when he was about finished the boat got to him.

Kerry was bleeding from wounds to his arm and the guy said that he was too spent to get in the boat when Kerry stood in the bullets and reached for him and finally pulled him into the boat.

I'll concede that officers got medals for things that were commonly done by enlisted guys. I'll concede that I don't know the Navy's standards for awarding medals. I don't know about any of that, but anyone that gets wounded on three separate occasions, exposes himself to heavy small arms fire to help save a fellow soldier, and comes back with the respect and loyalty of his men, has my respect.

We should be able to agree on that. That's as much separate from agreeing or disagreeing with the man's ideologies and political bents. It's as separate as your and my respect for our common experiences in Vietnam is different from our views of what's best for America. I believe that good people can passionately and honestly disagree without having to attack on a personal basis and without having to denigrate the good work that they've done in the past.
