The data is still the data. >>>>>
The trial was initiated at Children's Medical Center, which led the multicenter study involving 22 hospitals and 393 children. Because of the research's worldwide clinical implications, the internationally renowned scientific research journal fast-tracked Giroir's findings to publication, said a spokesman for The Lancet.

BPI markedly reduced the need for major limb amputation by 68 percent, reduced the need for blood transfusions by 28 percent and significantly improved the functional recovery of children with this disease. Survival was improved by 25 percent if any amount of BPI could be given, and survival was improved by 67 percent if an entire 24-hour dose of BPI could be completed. Investigators believe that the results would be even better if BPI could be given by local emergency-room staff without the need for time-consuming study procedures.

"This is absolutely as positive of a trial as you're going to get in such a rare and rapidly fatal childhood disease," said Giroir, senior author of the study and holder of the Associates First Capital Corporation Chair in Pediatric Critical Care at UT Southwestern. "The data are compelling to the investigators, and will be equally as compelling to parents. There are no other alternative therapies that can improve outcome to this degree. For many children, BPI is their only hope
