Still as i recall the Conservatives under Mulrony basically said it was impossible to get rid of the deficit. In 1985 government revenues went up significantly as the country pulled out of recession - but the conservatives just increased spending. Now we still have a massive deficit although its under control.

Say what you will - the liberals took some unpopular decisions to get spending under control and they managed to eliminate the deficit which the conservatives said couldn't be done.

At least with Martin you know the country will remain solvent and won't fall in behind the current fad of the US of increasing defcits to unsustainable levels.
