Yes, I've seen a hospital kick out the "roommate" of my stroke-ridden father because he didn't have the money to pay for care. The kicked-out person was suffering the apparently horrible symptoms of sickle-cell anemia. The nurse said the hospital would pay for his taxi fare out of the hospital to avoid being charged with kicking him out, but that was all they could do.
