tc and CL thread ..

I have spent portions of the past few days in my spare time rigging up some removable HDs so I can use my wife's computer in the her downstairs office and keep the programs/email/applications separate.

She has a whole lot of vital info on her machine, and, even tho she backsup a goodly amount, I'd hate to be the culprit IF/WHEN something happens to "her machine" ...<ggggg>

This is what I've done ====
four(4) separate HDs [[only one(1) can be in use IN the computer at a time]] via a removable tray adapter

a) her "original" HD which came with the GateWay running WinXP with Acrobat 6.0, MS Visio Pro 2003 and Office 2003.

b) her HD with Win2k and Office 2003 running Outlook as email

c) my HD with Win2k and Office 2003

d) my Hd with Win2k and Office 2003 running Outlook as email

on all of these HDs, as I had to format and prepare three of them from scratch I did some thinking as to what I really needed to install
and
this is my observation, and the reason for this post ... to share MY opinion (and willing to listen to thoughts concerning these)

I find that I'm hard pressed to NOT install the following programs (alphabetically listed)

1) AdAware www.lavasoftusa.com/
2) BelArc www.belarc.com/
3) PopUpManager www.endpopups.com/
4) SpyBot www.safer-networking.org/
5) ZoneAlarm *free (didn't like Pro) www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp

these are FIVE that I classify as MUST HAVE for me

I've come to the conclusion that WinXP AND Win2k are superior operating systems .... I'm hard pressed to pick between them, other than the ubiquitous ONE machine ONE install ... hey, my four HDs are all on ONE machine, but I fear that MS will give me trouble, so I chose three 2k and left the original XP alone.

I have XP on two, no, make that three now, as I bought my son a new Dell for his birthday Wednesday....
can't build the dang things anymore for what I can buy a ready built box ....and have Win2k on two more boxes.... still got Win ME running on one Dell that I'll tend to next and Win98se on three or four removable HDs

The only thing I still like about 98se is that I have it on a verrrrrrry stable machine (homebuilt) with my charting platform running three monitors ... I'm gonna stay with that for as long as I can, due to the cost of new video cards to make Win2k or XP happy with multiple screens.

ok .. anyone have any thoughts ...
I just wanted to say that I've found the five MUST have items to be great for ME and can highly recco them to any readers of Computer Learning thread

now, one slight problem I've come up with, and hope that some reader can give me a fix ...

upon boot
two of the three new HDs I've fixed for the GateWay box with Win2k come up with a black screen with white letters requesting me to pick Win2kPro to complete booting ...
now, there is a thirty second countdown IF I don't choose to strike Enter and the boot will continue fine ....
one of the three, for some reason, just goes into normal bootup ....
had to be something I did in installation ...

any ideas/solution from CL folks?
