Well, the dichotomy is that had it NOT been for Dean, Kerry and all dems probably would have lost also. You remember the dems last year, they were so afraid from the 02 republican landslide to challenge Bush even though the country was obviously polarized and huge numbers of protesters were out wrt the war. Dean was the *only person* with the courage to stand up to Bush on every issue. As soon as Kerry and Edwards adopted the Dean positions, then the dem camp started to heat up. For this Dean deserves credit.

I agree with Killer and some others here that Dean could have won against Bush. The arrogant republican attitude wrt Dean was a product of last year, when they naively believed they would have a goldilocks 99-ish recovery on their hands and Iraqis would be throwing flowers at the feet of our troops. Bush's failed policies threaten to kill Bush more than Kerry killed Bush. Dean could have also taken Bush, or for that matter the village idiot will be able to take Bush in 04.

You were right though, AS when you said that these early hot candidates always flame out. Dean is another McCain here, somebody who idealists wish could win but will not. However, there is no reason to throw salt on the Dean candidacy, because dems that do that are sounding a lot like republicans that diss McCain. Sore losers, and the clubby insider crowd. Dean and McCain are the best of the best, really.
