Trend Macro Blog - According to Sunday's Washington Post, Democrats have come to an agreement on their election strategy:

"After months of bitter disputes over the direction of the party, top Democratic officials from front-running presidential candidate John F. Kerry to House and Senate leaders are coalescing around an election-year domestic agenda calling for higher taxes for wealthier Americans to finance an expansion of health care, education and other federal programs."

Translation: Democrats are going to run the exact same program that Walter Mondale ran on in 1984, which caused him to lose all but one state in the election that year.

The fact is that no winning presidential candidate has ever run on a program of raising taxes on anyone. Bill Clinton, probably the smartest Democratic politician of his generation, understood this well. Although he undoubtedly wanted to raise taxes if elected, especially on the rich, he actually ran on a middle class tax cut in 1992. He switched gears and double-crossed those who voted for him on the issue only after the election.

Should this report prove accurate, it only increases the odds that George W. Bush will win an easy re-election this year.
