It's the same thing! The Candidate's Character is "subjective" to your view of it.

A married Candidate cannot have had a recent affair. May be fine with you, but not with the voters. Until Reagan, a candidate who had been divorced was a scandal.

You last scenario is what the Democratic voters did with Clinton. They knew he was a likable scoundral, and they voted him in.
