So many doubted that the direct method would really work..

In the late 1980s/early 1990s there were at least three large computer manufacturers in Austin with a similar direct business model. The major difference in Dell's direct model was that they (known as PC Unlimited at the time) were willing to mix and match parts for a custom delivery while the others wanted the customer to pick from a list of two or three models.

Even then the major competition was Houston's Compaq. I attended several purchasing meetings where PC Unlimited won the order because Compaq had a special memory chip that cost more if the user wanted to upgrade.
