My guess would be that the majority of American citizens do not want someone who engages in extra-marital affairs representing them or their country.

I don't think that's the issue. The issue is that no one is perfect. All other things being equal, you would chose a non-cheater over a cheater. Like, duh. But would you chose a communist or a terrorist sympathizer over a cheater. Like, double-duh.

Besides, everyone who has extra-marital affairs isn't a cheater. You can't necessarily conclude cheating from the fact of an affair, although it's likely.
