Intel predicts 50 inch LCOS TVs to cost $1800

CAN YOU AFFORD a 50 inch plasma display? We know we can’t yet. But at the Intel Development Forum this morning, the firm showed off a high definition TV with sources claiming that boxes using its LCOS technology will cost as little as $1800 in the next year. We originally had this figure at $1500, apologies.
Intel already has design wins for this technology, but wouldn’t disclose them.
Steve Reed, director of ecosystem development, showed off a system using the technology, and we saw a sample of the silicon, which is in volume production, we understand. Essentially, it is a highly polished small chip divided into three segments for red green and blue, which shows the video or programme, and then back projects it to a screen.
Microsoft has a high definition WVM format but HDTVs coupled with microprocessors will demand a hefty 3GHz Pentium 4 to run the DVDs.
Film companies are already readying dual format videos for both regular and HD formats, with the first DVD to come out probably being Terminator 2.
Images include very high detail and a heap of mid level greys, and high colour saturation.
The silicon is already in production and we may see these $1500 HD machines by the end of the year.
Reed showed off a large 50-inch plasma screen which demonstrated just how LCOS looks.
