-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tue Feb 17 08:22:00 2004 EST SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb 17, 2004 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. (Brocade(R)) (Nasdaq: BRCD), the world's leading provider of infrastructure solutions for Storage Area Networks (SANs), today announced that Hitachi Data Systems and StorageTek(R) (NYSE: STK) have qualified Brocade's implementation of FICON technology on the Brocade SilkWorm(R) 12000 Director. Enterprise customers of both companies can now implement Brocade Director-class SAN solutions in IBM-compatible mainframe computing environments. This extended connectivity enables standardization of the SAN infrastructure across an organization's mainframe and open systems computing environments, contributing to more efficient use of staff resources and lowering operating costs. FICON technology makes full use of Fibre Channel's capability for high data rates and multiple concurrent connections, allowing enterprises to achieve maximum performance and flexibility of their mainframe computing resources. Brocade's implementation of FICON also enables customers to leverage Brocade's Secure Fabric OS to ensure a highly secure SAN environment. "With FICON support for Brocade's Director platform, our customers can now implement a single SAN infrastructure across both mainframe and open system computing environments," said Scott Genereux, Vice President of Global Marketing, Channels, and Business Development for Hitachi Data Systems. "This translates into a lower cost of ownership as customers simplify their operations." Mark Ward, StorageTek's General Manager and Vice President of Information Lifecycle Management Solutions group, noted, "Qualification of FICON for the Brocade 12000 Director complements the FICON capability of our V2X disk systems and T9840B tape drive, and enhances the capability of Brocade to support StorageTek's Information Lifecycle Management strategy. With FICON, a tape network infrastructure can be more cost-effectively consolidated and shared across environments." "FICON support is a growing requirement for the mainframe environment, allowing enterprise end users to take full advantage of the benefits of SANs," said Carl Greiner, Senior Vice President, META Group. "Such support enables customers to simplify their mainframe and open systems storage infrastructures and increase asset utilization across multiple storage domains."
